Planning quieter work in an open-plan office
Identify where conversations interrupt work, then choose a practical mix of space, etiquette and acoustic treatment.
Map the problem before buying
For a normal working week, note where calls happen, when meeting rooms are used by one person, and which desks are disturbed. Separate speech distraction from echo, visual distraction and a lack of places to meet.
Match the intervention
| Observed problem | A useful first response |
|---|---|
| Calls at desks | Provide a convenient call space and clear guidance on when to use it. |
| Reverberant room | Review absorptive surfaces and room layout. |
| Visual interruption | Adjust desk orientation, screens or circulation. |
| Meeting rooms occupied by individuals | Log concurrent calls and meetings, then assess smaller spaces. |
A pod can help with a specific task; it does not establish a universal productivity saving or remove the building’s approval requirements.
Trial and check the outcome
Choose a location people will use, then test privacy, comfort and access. After installation, track unmet demand and ask users what still interrupts work. Revisit booking rules and placement before assuming more pods are the answer.
